Glenda F. Newell, M.D.

Glenda F. Newell, M.D. is a board certified physician in Internal Medicine and a media spokesperson whose opinions on new advances in medicine and controversial medical issues have made her a valued medical expert. Dr. Newell has exemplified her exceptional talent to engage audiences in discourses about tough and complicated medical and health topics. Her audiences have included faith-based and professional organizations as well as local, regional and national medical organizations. Having served as a local health commissioner as well as president and secretary of local and regional medical societies, she is a much sought after speaker for youth groups and non -profit organizations that mentor pre-med and medical students. Dr. Newell has served as a medical consultant in various healthcare settings inclusive of ambulatory teaching clinics, private practice and physician foundation clinical practice. She is the Former Medical Director of Primary Care Services for one of the leading and cutting edge non-profit medical organizations within the United States. Dr. Newell has received acclaimed recognition for her work as the healthcare educational consultant for a major international philanthropic organization. She has traveled abroad to Africa where she has assessed methods of supporting the delivery of safe and effective health care to the women.

She is a native of North Carolina and a graduate of Miss Porter’s School. She received her medical degree from the University of Cincinnati of School of Medicine and her B.S. in Biology from Tufts University. In 2005, Dr. Newell received certification in Physician Leadership in Managing Ambulatory Care from the Harvard School of Public Health.

Dr. Newell’s diversified experience practicing medicine in the public and private sector for the past 28 years has given her the inspiration and the vision to co-found her own healthcare consulting business, Newell & Spriggs Consulting. She believes that health literacy; self-empowerment and initiative are required to create a culture of wellness within your work and home environment. One aspect of her company focuses on teaching the tools that will result in effective communication, savvy navigation and appropriate advocacy.  Dr. Newell’s personal experiences as an advocate and navigator for her friends and family over the years have affirmed for her the necessity for consumers of health care to acquire these skills.

She serves as Chairman of the Board of Imani Community Church and she is a member of the Physician’s Medical Forum Board. She is a former member of the Advisory Board of Alta Alliance Bank.

She is the recipient of numerous awards and honors from many organizations including the following: Jack and Jill of America, Inc., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Bay Area Black United Fund, John Hale Medical Society and Cinnamongirl, Inc. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and serves as the National Vice President of the Links, Incorporated and the Links Foundation, Incorporated.  She is a mother of four children and is married to Robert L. Harris, Esquire.

Brenda B. Spriggs, M.D.

Brenda B. Spriggs, MD, FACP, FACR, MPH, MBA has a diverse background in medicine, nonprofit initiatives, education, consulting and real estate development. Her medical career spans over 25 years of operating a consultative rheumatology/immunology practice and teaching at Children’s Hospital, San Francisco and at the University of California San Francisco, where she was conferred the title of Clinical Professor Emeritus in 2006.

Dr. Spriggs is co-founder of   Newell & Spriggs Consulting, LLC, a healthcare consulting company, committed to helping corporations and organizations maintain their competitive edge and profitability by ensuring a productive workforce, targeting risk management, and identifying the drivers for spiraling health care costs.

Dr. Spriggs matriculated as an NIH Fellow in Rheumatology at the University of California, where upon completion of her studies, she was invited to join the faculty as a Clinical Instructor. In this capacity she also served as medical coordinator for the Regional Program for Arthritis. She established her private rheumatology practice in 1976 at Children’s Hospital, serving as Chief of Rheumatology until 1994. She served on a number of professional boards and scientific committees until 1997, mentoring future rheumatologists and receiving numerous teaching and recognition awards.

Dr. Spriggs’ nonprofit board directorships have included: the Arthritis Foundation of Northern California; Providence Hospital (Sisters of Charity), Oakland; Board of Trustees, Children’s Hospital, San Francisco, and the Drew College Preparatory School Board of Trustees. Her international commitments include: International League against Rheumatism in Sydney, Australia, 1985; Citizen Ambassador for the Gore/Mbeke Initiative for Education, Science and Technology in South Africa, 1995; and the Global Strategies Program at Templeton College, University of Oxford, England, 2003. She is currently a member of the Emeritus Board of the Alta Bates Summit Foundation, the Women’s Foundation of California (Finance & Communications Comm.), and a founding board director at One PacificCoast California Bank, FSB where she has served as Chair of Governance/Compensation and is currently Chair of the Governance/Nominating Committee.

Her honors include the Beta Gamma Sigma, collegiate schools of business honor society, Phi Beta Kappa, Alpha Omega Alpha, Beta Kappa Chi, and Mortar Board Gold Key Honor Society. She has held membership in the American College of Healthcare Executives and is a Fellow of the American College of Rheumatology, a Diplomat and Fellow of the American College of Physicians, a Fellow of the American College of Rheumatologists, and a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

Dr. Spriggs earned her Bachelor of Science from Fisk University (summa cum laude), M.D. from Meharry Medical College, EMPH for healthcare executives from UCLA and her MBA from the Peter F. Drucker Graduate School of Management. She is the mother of two young adults and is married to Zealous D. Wiley, Jr., M.D.
